Remembering Scott in 2011

Memorial BenchOn July 25, 2011, the sisters of Scott Weinberger visited a new memorial bench installed in Scott's honor at Acorn Park in Oakfield, WI (the former site of the grade school that Scott and his siblings attended).

The attractive design of the polished black granite bench includes the inscription, "And in the end, the love you take is equal to the love you make. – Lennon/McCartney," a tribute to Scott's love for the music of The Beatles. The bench is located under a Burr oak tree, planted by Scott and his sisters to commemorate their parents' 50th wedding anniversary.

2011 Scott R. Weinberger Scholarship Recipient

The second Scott R. Weinberger Scholarship was awarded on May 25th, 2011 at Oakfield Senior High School's Awards Night. In attendance were Scott's sisters Mary Lee Lane and Michelle Weinberger-Burns, who presented the scholarship award to this year's recipient Mack Shaffer.

Mark Shaffer, 2011 Scott R. Weinberger Scholarship recipientThe Scott R. Weinberger Scholarship is awarded annually to an Oakfield High School senior who intends to pursue higher education and has been determined to “most epitomize the values and character associated with the late Scott Weinberger.” Mack was selected based on his essay, in which he details his love for music and film as well as the challenges of fitting in at what he describes as the "school of athletes." Certainly, anyone who knew Scott can appreciate that Mack was an appropriate recipient for this scholarship.

"We were able to meet Mack and his parents," said Michelle. "We think that Scott would have enjoyed knowing that this young man 'found his voice' thru music, since Scott was not a major player of sports, either." Mack plans to use his scholarship this fall to attend the University of Wisconsin at Fond du Lac.

Because of the strong support of Scott's many friends, over $3,000 was raised to establish the Scott R. Weinberger Scholarship Fund. The first beneficiary of this educational scholarship was Jacob Michael Suprenand, who received official recognition during the Oakfield High School graduation ceremony on May 26, 2010. (His award-winning essay can be downloaded in PDF format here.)

Jacob Suprenand receives the first Scott Weinberger ScholarshipThe scholarship was awarded in person by Scott's sisters Michelle and Julie, who were surprised to discover that Jacob's father Mike is an Oakfield High graduate who knew Scott well. "Jacob is really a wonderful young man. He really made me think of Scott. It was great meeting his parents," noted Michelle. Jacob, who earned a 4.0 GPA at Oakfield High, will make good use of this award as he attends UW-Madison this fall.
